raw willow artist premium charcoal sticks
RAW WILLOW ARTIST PREMIUM CHARCOAL STICKS
The Coate family specialised in willow cultivation in the South West of England, initially for basketry work.
Percy's grandfather, Robert Coate started in the business in 1819 by buying and selling local willow crops.
In the 1960s Percy Coate began experimenting with willow as a charcoal drawing material. After perfecting the technique, the new Coates willow charcoal began to be marketed around the world in the 1970s.
The manufacturing process is based on selecting the best willow branches from each crop, drying them without compressing them, sorting them and burning them according to their diameter with slight variations depending on their characteristics.
The result is a charcoal with a smooth, velvety, deep and intense black colour, recognised by artists as the best quality charcoal in the world. The multinationals in the sector that market them (Winsor & Newton, Daler-Rowney etc.) give it the category of Premium Artist Charcoal.
Artemiranda sells them in industrial packaging units in order to reduce costs, avoiding intermediaries and fancy boxes.
